Sam Edozie scored the opening goal for Manchester City before the impressive Cole Palmer added a brace to make it a comprehensive win for the hosts. The victory would eventually seal the Premier League 2 title for Manchester City.
They had to wait for the results from the games involving Tottenham Hotspur and Blackburn Rovers later to confirm their title win. Tottenham Hotspur u23s were on the receiving end of a 4-1 home defeat to Chelsea in their London Derby clash, while Blackburn Rovers could only play out a 2-2 draw at home to Liverpool. The two teams needed a win to stop Manchester City from winning the league title but they were not able to achieve it.
The Manchester United u23s have not had the best of seasons as they are guaranteed to finish mid-table. With three games left to play this season, the Red Devils are ninth on the 13-team table with 28 points from the 21 games played.
Darren Fletcher and his Manchester United contingent have a lot of work to do if they want to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League 2 trophy next season. For now, Manchester City are the kings of the league.
Fletcher can take solace from the likes of Elanga, team skipper Will Fish and Shola Shoretire joining the first team squad for the recent Europa League win over Granada. They were on the bench for the Europa League second leg round of eight clash with the Spanish team at Old Trafford on Thursday night. Gaining exposure like that will be of the benefit to the young Manchester United players on the long run.
